Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around eight miles north of Peterborough, is the town of Market Deeping.

Geographically, Market Deeping is situated on the north bank of the River Welland - a river which forms part of a natural border between Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. The town's name is derived from an Old English word meaning 'deep fen' or 'low place'.

During the Norman era, Richard de Rulos raised a high bank around the flood-prone river in Market Deeping, or Deeping St Guthlac as it was known at the time. Similar work was carried out by Richard's son-in-Law, Baldwin Fitzgilbert in neighbouring Deeping St James to the east. Market Deeping is part of a series of settlements in what is known collectively as The Deepings, but is the only one with town status. The market referenced in its name has been held here since at least 1220.

At the northern end of the town centre is St Guthlac's Church. This has been a place of worship for over 800 years, and features a 12th century entrance arch, a 13th century porch and a 15th century tower. The clock was installed in 1763, and two early 18th century sundials inscribed 'The Day is Thine' and 'The Night Cometh' adorn the south and north sides of the tower respectively. The church is Grade I listed.

In 1849 a railway station opened in the neighbouring village of Deeping St James (situated immediately east of Market Deeping as part of a continous settlement). This formed part of the Lincolnshire Loop Line that linked Peterborough to Gainsborough via Boston, Spalding and Lincoln. The station closed to passengers in 1961. Today, public transport to Market Deeping consists of direct buses from Peterborough, Bourne, Stamford, Spalding and various other nearby settlements.
