Rumänien in den 1920er Jahren: der Anbau, die Produktion und der Verkauf von Tabak waren das wichtigste staatliche Monopol. Fast könnte man sagen: der Staat war auf den Geschmack gekommen, weshalb man auf einem 15 Hektar großen Gelände mit dem Bau des Versuchsinstituts für Tabakanbau und –fermentation begann. Man wollte dem Ganzen eine monumentale Atmosphäre verleihen, weshalb man sowohl das Hauptgebäude als auch die beiden Villen links und rechts davon im neo-rumänischen Stil errichtete. Nach drei Jahren Bauzeit ging die Einrichtung 1930 in Betrieb mit dem Ziel, die unterschiedlichsten Tabaksorten zu untersuchen, um schließlich einen Tabak von höchster Qualität zu erhalten. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gerät Rumänien unter Hammer und Sichel, nach Errichtung des kommunistischen Regimes beschließt die Regierung, aus dem Tabakinstitut ein Institut für Lebensmittelchemie zu machen – an Stelle von Tabak untersucht man jetzt Salami, Schmelzkäse und Fischkonserven.
Heute ist das Institut nicht wegen seiner Entdeckungen auf dem Gebiet der Ernährungsforschung in Erinnerung, sondern wegen eines Strafverfahrens gegen einen Politiker. Mit Hilfe von Staatsangestellten kaufte er das Grundstück und die Gebäude im Jahr 2003 für 100.000 Euro, der tatsächliche Preis wurde auf 60 Millionen Euro geschätzt. Nach langen Ermittlungen wurde der Politiker angeklagt und wegen Korruption zu einer Gefängnisstrafe verurteilt – das alte Institutsgebäude beschlagnahmt. Unbewacht fiel das ehemalige Tabakinstitut der Gleichgültigkeit der Behörden zum Opfer und wurde über die Jahre von Vandalen immer weiter zerstört. Mit feuchten Wänden und eingestürzten Decken liegt das symbolische Gebäude der rumänischen Industrie jetzt in Trümmern, sein Ende scheint besiegelt. Obwohl es in der Geschichte des Landes eine entscheidende Rolle spielte, erklärten Vertreter des Kultusministeriums, dass das beinahe 100 Jahre alte, historische Bauwerk NICHT unter Denkmalschutz stehe, den Erben des inhaftierten Politikers steht nun die Möglichkeit offen, es einfach abzureißen …
Romania in the 1920s: the cultivation, production and sale of tobacco was the main state monopoly. One could almost say: the state got a taste for it, which is why construction of the experimental institute for tobacco cultivation and fermentation began on a 15-hectare site. They wanted to give the whole thing a monumental atmosphere, which is why both the main building and the two villas to the left and right of it were built in the neo-Romanian style. After three years of construction, the facility went into operation in 1930 with the aim of examining a wide variety of tobacco types in order to ultimately obtain tobacco of the highest quality. After the Second World War, Romania fell under hammer and sickle; after the establishment of the communist regime, the government decided to turn the tobacco institute into an institute for food chemistry - instead of tobacco, salami, processed cheese and canned fish were now being examined.
Today the institute is remembered not for its discoveries in the field of nutritional research, but for a criminal case against a politician. With the help of state employees, he bought the land and buildings in 2003 for 100,000 euros, the actual price was estimated at 60 million euros. After a long investigation, the politician was charged and sentenced to prison for corruption - the old institute building was confiscated. Left unguarded, the former tobacco institute fell victim to the indifference of the authorities and was increasingly destroyed by vandals over the years. With damp walls and collapsed ceilings, the symbolic building of Romanian industry now lies in ruins, its end seemingly sealed. Although it played a crucial role in the country's history, representatives of the Ministry of Culture stated that the almost 100-year-old historic building is NOT listed, and the heirs of the imprisoned politician now have the option of simply demolishing it...
