"Hawaiians, are not American. We are not European, we are not Asians, and we are not immigrants to the Pacific. We are the children of Papa (Earth Mother) and Wākea (Sky Father.)"

Throwback Thursday: In 1992, Kumu Haunani-Kay Trask was featured on a panel focusing on Racism and 1st Amendment rights. Here she acquaints the audience to herself by opening with her moʻokūʻauhau (genealogy) which then transitions into a historical moʻokūʻauhau of Hawai'i. In doing so, Trask exhibits a traditional introductory practice of Hawai'i, in which moʻokūʻauhau informs the listeners of one's history, political stance and source of mana.
