Space Shuttle Columbia landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California on 16 November 1982 at the conclusion of mission STS-5. Columbia is seen high over the Mojave Desert as it approaches Edwards AFB to land on paved runway 22, performing a braking test in the process. Vance D. Brand was mission commander; pilot was Robert F. Overmyer; mission specialists were Joseph P. Allen and William B. Lenoir. The mission traveled 2,110,849 statute miles over five days.
