SolReSol: The Project – Digitising the Language of Music and Colors Two Centuries Later

SolReSol is an a priori constructed language of music and colors created by a French musician François Sudre in 1827.

Although Solresol predates the most widespread conlangs, it never reached its popularity as an auxiliary language. Instead, it found a special niche among artists and those who are fascinated by the versatility of its semiotic system.

Almost two centuries later I attempted to recreate the language in UE4, an engine used for video games and real-time graphics, in order to showcase its beauty and pay an hommage to its creator.

In the talk I will also share my experience of creating a standalone language application from scratch with no programming experience, as well as setting up the website and crowdfunding it, so I expect this talk to be informative and practical to a broader audience of language enthusiasts.

Phil Shary is a classically trained philologist with a PhD in comparative linguistics. His interests include semantics, constructed languages and computational linguistics (and do not include the Oxford comma).

Throughout his teaching career he has worked with students from all walks of life. He enjoys learning something new every day and seeks to share his experience by empowering people regardless of their background.
