Caledonia Steam Train Restoration Story

This video documents the restoration of the Caledonia Steam Train built in 1885. It is the most powerful steam locomotive in the Isle of Man Railway.

The Caledonia was taken out of service in 2008 for the restoration to begin before returning to service in March 2013. Extensive work was carried out on the train's parts by a Hertfordshire-based company but the reassembly was all done in the Douglas workshops. It has been painted in its original Manx Northern Railway livery of Metropolitan Carriage red.

Unique among the Manx steam railway engines, Caledonia was built in 1885 by Dubs of Glasgow for use on the Foxdale Railway which was operated by the Manx Northern. The engine was contracted out to help build the Snaefell Mountain Railway and she worked the line to the internment camp at Knockaloe during the First World War.

For her centenary in 1995, she was removed from the museum at Port Erin and made a precarious return trip to the summit of Snaefell.
