LESSON NOTES
Lencioni uses a story to offer his solution to the problem of how to make a dysfunctional team work better together. The story introduces Lencioni’s ‘5 Dysfunctions of a Team Model’. He suggests that real-life teams can use it to understand their own issues. He then offers ways to overcome them and work together more effectively.

According to the book, the five dysfunctions are:
• Absence of trust
• Fear of conflict
• Lack of commitment
• Avoidance of accountability
• Inattention to results

These five levels are not discrete. They interact with one another.

The first step in addressing the dysfunctions is to recognize them. The team leader needs to start the process by demonstrating trust and encouraging constructive conflict.

• Trust enables conflict
• Conflict builds commitment
• Commitment leads to accountability
• Accountability is the platform for results
