LESSON NOTES
When you want your team to perform well, there are two approaches you can take:
• Manage them well
• Select them for a good balance

Charles Margerison and Dick McCann co-founded Team Management Systems and co-wrote Team Management: Practical New Approaches: https://geni.us/akBFtV

Together, Margerison and McCann have developed a fair number of interconnecting models. There is too much to attempt to describe them here. They include work on:
• Workplace values
• Influencing skills
• Opportunities and Obstacles

Types of Work Wheel
Margerison and McCann assessed team members’ activities into eight work functions. They describe them as:
Advising
Innovating
Promoting
Developing
Organizing
Producing
Inspecting
Maintaining

Different jobs have different critical functions that need people with the right skills and competencies, to perform them well.

Critical Work Functions

Every job role will have a number of ‘critical work functions’. These make the difference between good and poor job performance.

Team Management
Margerison and McCann define ‘role preferences’: roles in a team that people are most likely to enjoy. When people’s critical work functions match their work preferences, they are likely to:
• be happier in their job
• perform better

Team Role Preferences
Reporter-Adviser
Creator-Innovator
Explorer-Promoter
Assessor-Developer
Thruster-Organizer
Concluder-Producer
Controller-Inspector
Upholder-Maintainer

Margerison and McCann’s measures are how people prefer to:
• relate with others (Relationship)
• gather and use information (Information)
• make decisions (Decisions)

• organize themselves and others (Organization)

These measures lead them to create RIDO scales (Relationships, Information, Decisions, Organization). And these scales showed a strong relationship to the Types of Work.

The Linker Role

At the center of the Margerison McCann Team Management Wheel is the ‘Linker’ role. We need to be able to take this role to be successful in our jobs. It is how we integrate and coordinate with other people, within and outside our team.

The Linker role is particularly important for the team leader, as you’d expect.

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. Think about how you like to participate in the teams you currently are a part of. Which team roles do you most readily play? (2 MC CPD Points)
2. Think about your current team. Go through the member and think about the roles they each most often play. Are there any obvious gaps? Are there any roles where two or more people compete to play them? (4 MC CPD Points)
3. From your analysis in 1 and 2, think about what steps may help to better balance your team. What can you do to help? (2 MC CPD Points)
