There are a number of disorders and conditions that can cause right shoulder pain as a symptom. The most common is rotator cuff tendinitis, which is characterized by swelling in the tendons of the shoulder due to an injury.

Right shoulder pain can sometimes result from an injury that actually happens in another part of your body, such as the neck or biceps. When this occurs, it's called "referred pain." Referred pain generally doesn’t get worse when you move your shoulder.

Other causes of shoulder pain include:

Arthritis, which often occurs due to "wear-and-tear" as you get older.

Torn cartilage or torn rotator cuff, which are injuries that sometimes happen during sports activity.

Swollen bursa sacs or tendons, which happen due to injuries or repetitive overuse.

Bone spurs, which are bony projections that develop along the edges of bones.

Frozen shoulder, a condition that limits your range of motion, which happens when certain tissues in your shoulder joint become thicker and tighter

Dislocated shoulder

Pinched nerve in the neck or shoulder.

Spinal cord injury that causes the type of "referred pain" previously mentioned

Most people have heard or read that pain in the left shoulder and arm can be a sign of a heart attack. But heart attack pain can also travel to the right shoulder and arm. Anyone who has right shoulder pain accompanied by other traditional heart attack symptoms should get medical attention right away. These symptoms include pain or discomfort in the chest, back, neck, jaw, or stomach, along with difficulty breathing and a cold sweat.
