WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Elizabeth Rhynold, Geriatrician, and Dr. Shanna Trenaman, Pharmacist, talk about what deprescribing is, how it works, frailty, functional dependence, factors related to the need for full assessments, patient empowerment and more.

They focus on benzodiazepines, safe sleep promotion and the role of anticholinergic medications in their work. The goal will be to increase participant confidence in supporting people trying to gradually decrease and discontinue medications that increase the risk of falls in collaboration with their prescriber.

PRESENTERS:
Dr. Elizabeth Rhynold is a rural geriatrician in South West Manitoba. She does Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments with older adults living with frailty either in person or by TeleHealth. She is a member of the Prairie Mountain Health Falls Steering Committee. She participated in a Sedative Deprescribing Initiate 2018 – 2020 that was supported by the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety Dr. John Wade Patient Safety Innovation Award.

Dr. Shanna Trenaman is a licensed pharmacist and Assistant Professor with the College of Pharmacy at Dalhousie University. Shanna completed her BScPharm, MAHSR and PhD at Dalhousie University. She is an Accredited Canadian Pharmacy Resident, having completed her hospital pharmacy residency at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Trenaman’s research approaches the topic of appropriate drug use in older adults from the perspectives of pharmacology, epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology and health services research.
