On November 29, 1980, 32-year-old Granger Taylor was seen for the last time eating dinner at a local diner. He then vanished from the farm where he lived with his family on Vancouver Island in Washington state.

Taylor left a mysterious note behind that read: “Dear Mother and Father, I have gone away to walk aboard an alien spaceship. As recurring dreams assured a 42-month interstellar voyage to explore the vast universe. Then return.”

He concluded by telling his parents, “please use the instructions in my will as a guide to help. Love, Granger.”

A map of unknown significance was drawn on the back of the letter, and the word “death” had been crossed out and replaced with the word “departure.”

The strange circumstances of his disappearance didn’t surprise his best friend, Robert Keller, with whom he built a life-size spaceship replica in his backyard. Granger Taylor was known in the community for being extremely handy at repairing vehicles and working on his own space-related mobility projects. Furthermore, he was also known for being an alien-fanatic and was obsessed with stories of UFOs and extraterrestrial sightings.

Shortly before he disappeared, Granger told another friend, Bob Nielsen, that aliens had been in direct contact with him. Nielsen recalled, “He lay there and got mental communications with somebody from another galaxy. They were just talking to him in his mind.”

Several years after his disappearance, forestry workers stumbled on Taylor's truck, which appeared to have been blown up by dynamite. No other evidence was discovered at the scene, and Granger Taylor’s unsettling “trip” remains unsolved. Some believe that the truck exploded from the heat of a spaceship taking off, while others think that the car may have accidentally or purposely been destroyed by Granger himself.
