100 Year Old Safe Restoration Part 2 of 2

Welcome to my channel. This week please enjoy part two, the finale video on the Reliable Safe restoration. I believe this antique safe was made sometime after 1918 but probably in the 1920’s or 1930’s. There is a patent date of 1918 on the lever handle. It’s on the smaller side of the rolling safe types but still a very stout unit! It was made by The Reliable Safe and Lock Company from Covington Kentucky. I found this safe at an estate sale in Burlington, NC and it was originally sold by a distributor in New Bern, NC. The front as all original, but it was evident that the top, side and casters had been repainted at some point, making for a perfect “not all original” restoration.
I stripped the paint and whatever else was caked on this door, sanded, bondo'd, primed and painted with several coats of gloss clear, then wet sanded and topped with two coats of gloss clear to achieve and very shiny and slick finish.
I removed the lock, which was a huge ordeal for me as I have never done this before, but was able to get it cleaned and serviced. I polished all the metal parts and nickel plated the lever handle and the backing plate for the dial, another first for me. In the end it was a pain but it all went back together just fine and works greats.
I wanted to try painting the pinstripes and the logo myself, but I called a audible and called a pro in. I just didn't want to put this much effort into the project and have the logo come out sub-par. Jamie did a fantastic job, especially since I gave him little to go on.

For reference, some of the other popular brands of safes around this same time period were; Hall’s Safe, Cary Safe, Diebold safe, and Victor Safe co.
