A complete profile of the magnificent Bhor Ghats, as seen from the 16529 Mumbai CST Bangalore Udyan Express.
The towering Bhor Ghats forms the linkage between the Konkan Plains and the Deccan Plateau in Western India. In between the 28 kilometres separating Lonavala and Karjat, trains ascend a staggering 570 metres (nearly 1,900 feet), curving across the Sahyadri hills, negotiating some of the steepest gradients on the Indian Railways. The tracks cuts right through the hills, courtesy 28 tunnels in a 21 km stretch between Khandala and Karjat. This section forms one of the most beautiful stretches of the Indian Railways, particularly during the monsoons, when the rain clouds envelop the Sahyadri range and cause the numerous waterfalls amongst the ghats flow in torrents.
In this video, a Krishnarajapuram WDP4 powers the Udyan Express through the ghats, ably supported by 3 Kalyan WAG7s as the rear, acting as bankers. The steep steady climb begins a station after Karjat - from Palasdhari - and continues right till Khandala. As the journey was undertaken in the winter, the forests and the vegetation atop the hills are thin, leaving the black rocks exposed to the sunlight. However, luckily, there was still a waterfall to be seen a little after Monkey Hill (16:30). A little before this, at around 15:00, a Kazipet WDG3 came charging down the hills, its headlights flashing, with the Chennai Central Mumbai Express, with a single RMS coach!
