The name "Cabbagetown" comes from the Irish immigrants who settled there starting in the late 1840s. These newcomers were so poor that they grew cabbage in their front yards to feed their families. Canadian author Hugh Garner's novel, "Cabbagetown," vividly captures life in the neighborhood during the Great Depression.
