14th Apr 2020 marks the 20th anniversary of Sakhi aka Alaipayuthe.

Can't believe that Sakhi was released 20 years ago. Dubbed from Alaipayuthe, was one of the BEST of Mani Ratnam who is a master in making love epics. The characterization was solid and the way the screenplay adopted in a back and forth manner of story telling i.e. flashback travels along with the search of Shanthi (Shalini) in the current time was something that was never done before in southern films. Thanks to the mind boggling editing. A.R.Rahman gave a mind blowing soundtrack and BGM. Pachandaname was on rage those days followed by Snehituda. ARR typically re-uses the main tunes of his songs along with some of the interludes, he usually do not compose a separate theme that matches each character (unlike Ilayaraja). However he composed couple of themes that you can hear in this BGM. The one that comes when Madhavan is in search for Shanthi there is a beautiful guitar theme accompanied by Violin, simply stirss your mind (listen from 8:40 in this video), and the same theme was composed with vocal during climax when Shalini in ICU. The tempting beats that reverberate when Madhavan looks for Shanthi in train stations. And another theme during Jayasudha and Shalini meet up is too good. Rest are all songs that were played instrumentally. There are couple of bit songs that were not released on CD (but they were released in the Hindi version later in 2002) are "Mangalyam Thantunanena" that was done on rock and pop elements and "Chinnari Ponnari" sung in classical style which is a squeal to the song "Alai Pongera " are very pleasure to hear.

overall , the score takes you into the year 2000 if you had watched this film that time. Enjoy !
