Sri Lanka, one of the oldest traditionally Buddhist countries in the world, continues to preserve the rich legacy of Theravada Buddhism for future generations. Among its many practices, the Katina Cheewara Poojawa (Katina Robe Ceremony) holds a special place as an offering of robes to the Maha Sangha at the conclusion of the rainy season retreat (Vassana). This deeply spiritual ceremony symbolizes gratitude and reinforces communal ties.
On November 3, 2024, Sri Lankans residing in British Columbia, Canada, gathered at the Mirage Banquet Hall in Surrey to celebrate the Katina Cheewara Ceremony. The event provided an opportunity for Sri Lankan Buddhists to honor their religious heritage while creating a space for younger generations to learn about the traditions of their homeland.
