Crises of democracy arise in every part of the modern world. Many say it is because the elected representatives represent not the people’s voices but the voices of the social and economic elites. Is there more to this issue that this simple explanation?

In the opening lectures, Jacques Ranciere looks into what we vaguely regard as the generic characteristics of democracy. His conclusion is rather shocking: achieving perfect democracy is impossible because of the innate contradictions inherent to the system. Nevertheless, he doesn’t deny the value of democracy, but rather shows us how understanding these contradictions can show us the direction democracy should move towards - a democracy of action.

In lectures four and five, Ranciere sheds light on the true value of democracy, going over the history of people’s political movements to materialize the ideals of democracy. In his final lectures, he shows us how modern democracies should evolve, reviewing the crisis of democracy caused by globalization and capitalism.
