Note this service reverses at Sheffield meaning this services passes near Dore & Totley twice but only goes through the station the first time. At Nottingham the class 156 on the rear then front of this service would have detached and continued via Grantham, Peterborough and Ely to Norwich

Services on this route operate once an hour all operated by EMR as part of the Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich service. This service had the standard stopping pattern (other than Ilkeston) but some services make additional stops at some other stations on this route. There is an additional fast Manchester to Sheffield service operated by TransPennine Express each hour going to Cleethorpes as well as a 2 hourly stopping service on the Hope Valley line going via Romiley. Between Sheffield and Nottingham a second hourly service calling at all stations is operated by Northern as part of the Leeds to Nottingham service. On the CLC line there are 2 stopping services each hour between Lime Street and Oxford Road as well as Merseyrail on the Northern Line to Liverpool Central from Hunts Cross and South Parkway.

This service connects many different lines together including the West Coast Main Line, Midland Main Line and East Coast Main Line (when continuing to Grantham and Peterborough. Connections to many other operators including Merseyrail, Northern, TransPennine Express, Transport for Wales, London Northwestern Railway, Avanti West Coast and Cross Country can be made from this service. This services also connects directly to more Tram/Light Rail systems than any other single service with Piccadilly providing interchange with the Manchester Metrolink, Sheffield with the Supertram and Nottingham with the Nottingham Express Transit.

The rolling stock used on this route is mainly 2 carriage class 158 Express Sprinter and 2 carriage class 156 Express Sprinter trains with most services formed of 4 carriages between Liverpool and Nottingham although 2 and 6 carriage services do sometimes operate. As this route was originally planned to leave EMR the class 170 Turbostar EMR regional train fleet are not currently planned to operate this service.

This route is mostly unelectrified with short sections of both overhead AC and 3rd Rail DC electrification on parts of this route. This route is mainly double track throughout with some sections of 3/4 track.
