Was the world’s greatest swordsman Scottish?
Donald McBane was one of the greatest fighters Scotland ever produced. A professional soldier by trade, McBane is said to have collected around two-dozen combat wounds from musket balls, bayonets and grenades. When he wasn’t in the field or running his tavern back home, McBane was picking fights or responding to challenges. He claimed to have participated in at least 100 duels. He even challenged Rob Roy MacGregor to a duel once. McBane opened a fencing school and developed a sword-fighting technique that combined graceful movement with swift and deadly lunges. For instance, his signature move, the “Boar’s Thrust,” involved dropping to one knee while simultaneously jabbing upward in a fast uppercut. McBane kept on dueling well into old age. He even worked as a prizefighter in his sixties. Shortly before his death in 1732, he wrote The Expert Sword-Man’s Companion which is still studied today by historical martial artists.
