Superman Analogue: Supergirl (Matrix / Linda Danvers)

Описание к видео Superman Analogue: Supergirl (Matrix / Linda Danvers)

After the Crisis on Infinite Earths, there was a Supergirl shaped hole in the DCU, so enter: Matrix! First an artificial entity, later bonded with a human soul to transcend her original role!

Original Text - For today's #SupermanAnalogue, I want to talk about a strange creature of 90s comics. In retrospect she was so complicated to explain that it's hard to believe that she had the longevity that she did, but she was MY Girl of Steel when I was getting into comics, she's my Supergirl
Following the John Byrne reboot of the franchise in the 80s, Superman was canonically the last Kryptonian, so the extended family he had built up was wiped away. However, in his last story before departing the book, Byrne introduced his own take on Supergirl: Matrix
Matrix was a creation of the Pocket Universe (BRINGING IT BACK!) which had fallen under seige to Zod and his allies. Their Superboy had died, so the benign Lex Luthor created a superbeing from Lana Lang. Though she was wholly artificial, she at first believed herself to be Lang.
She had strength and flight, along with shapeshifting, invisibility, and psychic blasts, making her closer in power to Martian Manhunter. Though she had some programmed memories, she was very naive at first. She spent time confused about her identity, while living with the Kents.
Later, she mistook the young clone of Lex Luthor (masquerading as his own son) to be her creator reborn and fell in love with him. She served at his side, often manipulated to further his schemes.
This led to her often being held back when she could have assisted like when Doomsday first arrived. Though she later joined the fight...
...only for her invulnerability to be found wanting. Fortunately she was still just a goo person then and was able to reform herself. However, it's clear that while she was impressive compared to most heroes, she was a tier below Superman.
Now, eventually the clone Lex was revealed to have the mind of the OG Lex and be (gasp) EVIL. Supergirl understandably lost it. She then wandered without purpose for a time. (I mean, she joined the Titans but she didn't have a schtick besides being part of the Super family)
This is when we get to @PeterDavid_PAD 's run. He had the Matrix entity merge with a dying girl named Linda Danvers (one of the names used by the Silver Age version). The fusion stabilized her being, limiting her powers, but linking it to a soul, albeit a lost one.
This fusion of artificial purity and real humanity creeated something special: it birthed an Earth born Angel! Supergirl became a being of holy fire, replete with blazing wings...
...and eyes of fire.
However, this was not to last (despite the original intent). The Animated Supergirl had become very popular so her design was altered to resemble that. The fused being was split and we followed Danvers who was left with a fraction of her powers as she searched for her other half.
This is where the character really proved herself as a hero in my mind. She had the Golden Age Superman's powers while struggling with the power creeped foes of the day. Eventually, she got a power boost but never fully merged with the Matrix side again which ascended as an angel
The closing arc of her book "Many Happy Returns" is one of my favorites. It sees a version Kara Zor El show up and eventually Linda takes her place in the Silver Age continuity.
While there, she (and remember they are NOT related) falls in love with the Silver Age Superman and starts a family.
Sidenote: this version Kara Zor-El briefly has a thing with Superboy who at this point was a human clone only modified to RESEMBLE Superman, not an actual clone of Superman. I guess they all are secretly horny for each other but hold back because of taboos.
Anyway, Supergirl sacrifices herself to save all the multiverse, but more importantly, her daughter who survives somewhere on the edge of reality.
This Supergirl is just as noble as the original, going on a FAR more complicated journey (even if it's indicated that she too survived but has hidden herself from public view). She was cool and weird. She was the Supergirl I grew up with and, damn, she was a doozy!
