According to the beliefs of the Aymara people, the Achachilas are a group of nature spirits that live in the mountains near the Ayllus (communities). It is said that they control the weather and send rain, frost, hail, etc. They also watch over the people, sharing their struggles and their suffering. In addition, they bless and protect these people of the Ayllus. In exchange, the community worships, prays, and makes offerings to them. These Achachilas are usually personified as old men and that is where their name comes from, because in Quechua and Aymara languages, Achachi means old man.
