Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ2 at Vernasca Silver Flag 2022: 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine sound!

During the 2022 Vernasca Silver Flag I managed to record this beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ2 entered and brought to the event by Simon Kidston. The Silver Flag is an event born in mid 90s as a revival of the historic Castell'Arquato-Lugagnano-Vernasca hillclimb held from 1953 to 1972. The route (closed to traffic) is about 9 km of which the first 5 are with straight roads, while the final part consists of a nice winding road. The Silver Flag isn't a competitive event but a simple parade of some of the most beautiful and important cars of the past, plus the addition of guests with more modern ones.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Alfa Romeo started a project for a sports car characterized by a tubular frame, a well-finished aerodynamic light alloy body and Giulia-derived mechanics. The car was named Giulia TZ (or TZ1) and it was unveiled during the 1962 Turin Motor Show. The car was built around a nickel-chromium tubular frame, featuring a lightweight alloy body made by Zagato, which continued the studies on the truncated tail begun with the Giulietta SZ. The mechanical part and engine was developed by Autodelta, starting from the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder of the Giulia TI bringing it up to around 160 hp. The Giulia TZ immediately showed itself to be very competitive: even before homologation in the GT Class, four TZs dominated the Prototypes 1600 category during a FISA race at Monza Circuit.

At the 1964 Turin Motor Show, the TZ2 makes its debut on the Zagato stand. Zagato replaces the light alloy body of the TZ1 with an even more streamlined fiberglass body embedded in the chassis, in order to strengthen the structure and further reducing the weight, which was reduced by approximately 40 kg compared to the TZ1 (from 660 to 620 kg). The 1.6L engine was further developed with the addition of a new twin spark cylinder head and dry sump lubrication, bringing power to 170 hp at 7500 rpm.

Due to the small displacement engine, the Giulia TZ2 had to be satisfied by bringing home only class victories (in the GT 1600 class or in the Sport 1600 one): in 1965 it won the 1000 kilometers of Monza (7th overall), the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Targa Florio, the 1000km of the Nürburgring and the 6 hours of Melbourne. It also won the Giro d'Italia and the Criterium des Cevennes of the same year. Other class victories came the following year in Monza, Sebring, the Targa Florio and at the Nürburgring, but the development of the TZ2 was already set aside at the end of 1965, when the new international sporting regulations decreed the limit of 500 units produced for the "GT" category and 50 for the "Sport" category, relegating the "TZ2" to the "Prototypes" category. Only 12 units were built of this amazing machine.
