In this episode of my A to Z Driving Leeds Districts series, we hit the road through Adel and Alwoodley – two of the more leafy, residential parts of North Leeds. It was a Bank Holiday, and what started as a promising drive quickly turned into a bit of a "wish I was elsewhere" situation.

We roll out of Adel and into Alwoodley in one continuous drive – it made sense geographically, but emotionally… maybe not so much. Adel has some charm, and I might return for a more relaxed walking video to do it justice. Alwoodley? Unless I missed something amazing, probably a one-and-done.

Brief History of Adel & Alwoodley, Leeds:

Adel, is one of the oldest parts of Leeds, with roots stretching back to Roman times. Archaeological finds suggest a Roman road and settlement once passed through here, and the Church of St John the Baptist, dating back to the 12th century, is a standout example of Norman architecture in West Yorkshire. Adel remained a small rural village for centuries before gradually becoming a desirable suburb as Leeds expanded northward in the 20th century.

Alwoodley, just northeast of Adel, developed later – mostly in the 20th century – as a residential area for Leeds' growing middle class. It’s known for its spacious homes, leafy avenues, and golf courses like Alwoodley Golf Club, which give the area a somewhat exclusive feel. Historically part of the parish of Harewood, Alwoodley was mostly countryside until suburban expansion transformed it into one of Leeds’ more affluent districts.

Despite their differences in historical depth, both areas are now peaceful, green, and primarily residential – offering a quieter contrast to the urban buzz of central Leeds.
