Abujhmad means unknown hills ('Abujh' means what you can’t understand, and 'mad' means hills). This 4,000 sq km area, larger than the state of Goa, has remained a 'liberated' zone for the Naxals, leaving them enough breathing space to consolidate. Only in April last year, the Chhattisgarh government undertook the first ever ground revenue survey in Abujhmad to ascertain land titles.
