Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra (they were originally called “Jean Goldkette’s Orange Blossoms") formed as a band in 1929 and was one of the most popular dance bands for almost 20 years.

Personnel included Herb Ellis (on guitar), Bobby Hackett (on trumpet), Red Nichols (on cornet), as well as Gene Gifford who made some very effective arrangements for the band. Some of the songs they had hits with were “Smoke Rings” (their theme song), “Blue Moon,” and “It’s the Talk of the Town.”

The Casa Loma Orchestra strongly appealed to young people during the Depression because the music resonated with them on two levels: the band wasn’t only able to swing at hot tempos but provided sweet music with ballads.

We put together a medley of Frankie Carle’s “Sunrise Serenade” and Gene Gifford’s “Casa Loma Stomp” to remember the Orchestra’s wide range of expression.
