‪@walkingwithbill‬ visits the town of Ellesmere in Shropshire England. A border town between England and Wales that has been in both countries at one point or another. It is famous for its Mere (a lake formed by a depression filled with water from melting ice at the end of the last ice age) which is one of nine in the area. The town being on a much fought over border had a 11th century motte-and-bailey castle which is now just earthworks with the Welsh princes being the lords over the town and surrounding lands from the late 1140s until 1282 even when a prince died and the lands were passed to the English King they were returned as gifts. This ended in 1282 when English forces from Chester captured the castle; it has been part of England ever since. Ellesmere Port in Cheshire was given the name because the canal from Ellesmere in Shropshire ended up at the river Mersey there. The canal was originally intended to join the rivers Mersey, Dee and Severn but it was never completed as planned. It was later renamed.
