Finasteride & how personality affects hair transplant results | Dr Bhatti explains

Personality traits and willingness to take or refuse Finasteride for hair loss and hair transplant are inter-linked. I seek to classify the personality traits into 6 archetypes:
Finasterophile – The Explorer or the Hero who is optimist, honest, candid and brave. They see good in every situation. Not only do they love having, they are a ray of sunshine in anyones’s they touch. They are confident, responsible and in control of their lives.
There is no problem with this category of patients, the Finasterophiles. They are always compliant but they have to be checked that they do not increase the dosage or get onto the more potent Dutasteride. This group has not been ever seen to complain about even the remotest side effects of Finasteride.
Finasterophobe- The Innocent who is optimistic, honest and humble and feels the most wholesome things in life are unadulterated and pure. They fear being unnoticed, unloved and unwanted and because their passionate desires cloud their judgement, they can easily be misled. They will not trust the advice about Finasteride. They will never liste and will never expose themselves to Finasteride. The rind rules their body and merely sniffing on the tablet of Finasteride will make their breast and testicle ache.
Finasteride ambivalent- Carl Jung’s The Sage archetype whose motivation is that “The truth will set you free”. He is knowledgeable assured and would believe in facts and experiences more than hearsay. He would take Finasteride but with cautious optimism. Sometimes I have to tell them to go on a month’s trial and see if they have a problem. If not, the drug can be continued. They never complain unnecessarily. Usually they take to the medicine and never have side effects.
Finasteride ignoramus- Carl Jung’s The Everyman is friendly, humble and authentic. They are honest and pure and have no ill-will towards anybody. They don’t hold grudges and believe everyone has the divine right to be who they truly are. Once convinced about the need to take Finasteride they will start taking it but if another person convinces them to the contrary, they will stop Finasteride.
Finasteride cynic- The Outlaw. He is advised medicine and explained the drawbacks if he does not take it. He would not say, but he takes the medicine eventually. They have a disdain for conformity that would remove any form of their freedom of choice (or anyone else’s). They are good at the core but anger is part of their motivation, which can become the dominant force. Without a fight, they are lost.
Finasteride castaway- Or the patient who is obese, maintains a sedentary lifestyle and has signs of hypogonadism with low ibido and sexual dysfunction. He should never be prescribed Finasteride.
The understanding of why people tend to gravitate to a particular set of character traits archetypes or as some would say stereotypes helps us analyse human behaviour. By giving us valuable insights into what drives their goals, desires, behaviors, and motivation.
A good assessment of the archetypes as related to the patient at hand will allow us to treat the patient better and give customized advice.
