Late Summer Eastern Bluebirds visit West Cobb (Fledglings and Juveniles)

We love these little guys and gals...their feathers all so fluffy and soft and adult feathers starting to show (in some cases more than others!)

People often ask how we get Eastern Bluebirds to come visit and keep coming back again and again. The trick is actually no trick at all. It's just a matter of consistency!

Each day we put out dried mealworms in a couple of medium sized terracotta plates. We also have a composite "house" style feeder that we fill with mealworms exclusively. These options allow medium and larger birds like blue jays, American Robins crows and huge birds like Turkeys to come eat (Yes, that's right Turkeys!).
The hanging "house" style feeder provides some protection for the smaller birds and they can fly in quickly, eat as much as they like and then they can fly back to thick brush to stay cool or out of site from hawks and other predators.

Each morning we also give the birds fresh water. Be consistent. The birds know when it's fresh and visit WAY more often! We have a few plates around the yard that serve as "birdie pools" and these actually range in size from a tiny 3" plate that Carolina Wrens like to drink and bath in, up to a 14" plate that we refer to as "The Big Pool". We've even seen Crowzie take baths in it and it's only a couple of inches deep!
