DREAM BUILD MTB - Salsa Cassidy

Whilst over the past few years Salsa Cycles have become more known for their bikepacking rigs and “Adventure By Bike” strapline, their mountain bike heritage goes deep and dates all the way back to the early days of the discipline and foundations of the brand. Testament to this is their UK DH team with MBUK and the late Jason McRoy, back in the early 90s.

Mountain bikes have come a long way since those early days, as have the trails we ride. The Cassidy builds on the brand’s heritage and comes in the shape of a super progressive and capable enduro 29er. Equipped with 165 mm rear and 180 mm front suspension travel, it’s a well-rounded shredder.

This bike was built for blasting through technical sections and hurtling down hair-raising descents with composure, yet pedals exceptionally well when you don’t have gravity’s help. This is no doubt due to the frame’s use of a concentric rear axle pivot (Split Pivot), which isolates braking and pedalling forces and has allowed Salsa to tune both independently. The superboost rear dropout makes for a superbly stiff rear triangle with a tonne of tyre clearance whilst keeping the chain stays short and cornering snappy. For those who prefer a slightly higher bottom bracket or steeper head angle, a flip chip on the shock link mount allows riders to fine tune the geo their personal preference.

Unique to Salsa’s new platform is Split Pivot+. By swapping the appropriate aftermarket link set, rear shock, and fork, you can convert Cassidy’s geometry and travel to that of its shorter travel, all-mountain sibling; the Blackthorn. So you can build your frame up in two ways depending on the terrain you will be riding. For this build, we went all out and kept things burly.
