The Autograph, completed in St. Petersburg on 21 February 1840, represents the first version of the piece and differs in part - especially in the cadenzas - from the first printing, published by Troupenas, Paris, at the end of 1841 (plate no. T. 1074). As an aside: the editors at Troupenas had made a mistake and initially published the work as op. 9. However, since Vieuxtemps wanted to use the opus number 9 for his fantasia "La Sentimentale", the engraving plate had to be corrected. A copy of the Troupenas edition with the wrong opus number 9 and handwritten correction is preserved in the Schott Archive in Mayence; there it was used as a basis for the edition in the Schott publishing house, which was now printed correctly as op. 11 on 2 June 1842.

The Fantaisie-Caprice is one of the three great concert fantasies based on original themes that Vieuxtemps composed (along with La Sentimentale op. 9b and the Fantasia Appassionata op. 35). The first performance of the Fantaisie-Caprice took place with great success on 4 March 1840 in St. Petersburg. In the following years, Vieuxtemps played this work regularly, usually alternating with his Fantasia "La Sentimentale". While the last recorded concert with "La Sentimentale" took place in Pest in January 1843, he continued to include the Fantaisie-Caprice in his programmes, for example on 10 November 1843 in New York, on 16 April 1854 in Weimar, and on 26 November 1859 in Berlin. Even after Vieuxtemps premiered his Fantasia Appassionata op. 35 in Vienna on 26 December 1859, he continued to perform the Fantaisie-Caprice, for example on 19 December 1864 in Leipzig and on 25 October 1865 in Berlin.

Das Autograph, das am 21. Februar 1840 in St. Petersburg fertiggestellt wurde, stellt die erste Fassung des Werkes dar und unterscheidet sich - vor allem in den Kadenzen - teilweise von dem Erstdruck, der Ende 1841 bei Troupenas, Paris, erschienen ist (Platten-Nr. T. 1074). Am Rande bemerkt: Die Herausgeber bei Troupenas hatten sich geirrt und das Werk zunächst als op. 9 veröffentlicht. Da Vieuxtemps aber die Opuszahl 9 für seine Fantasie "La Sentimentale" verwenden wollte, musste die Stichplatte korrigiert werden. Ein Exemplar der Troupenas-Ausgabe mit der falschen Opuszahl 9 und handschriftlicher Korrektur befindet sich im Schott-Archiv in Mainz; es diente dort als Vorlage für die Ausgabe im Schott-Verlag, die nun am 2. Juni 1842 korrekt als op. 11 gedruckt wurde.

Die Fantaisie-Caprice ist eine der drei großen Konzertfantasien über eigene Themen, die Vieuxtemps komponierte (neben La Sentimentale op. 9b und der Fantasia Appassionata op. 35). Die erste Aufführung der Fantaisie-Caprice fand unter großem Erfolg am 4. März 1840 in St. Petersburg statt. In den folgenden Jahren spielte Vieuxtemps dieses Werk regelmäßig, meist im Wechsel mit seiner Fantasie "La Sentimentale". Während das letzte nachgewiesene Konzert mit "La Sentimentale" im Januar 1843 in Pest stattfand, nahm er die Fantaisie-Caprice weiterhin in seine Programme auf, so etwa am 10. November 1843 in New York, am 16. April 1854 in Weimar, oder am 26. November 1859 in Berlin. Auch nachdem Vieuxtemps am 26. Dezember 1859 in Wien seine Fantasia Appassionata op. 35 uraufführte, konzertierte er weiterhin mit der Fantaisie-Caprice, beispielsweise am 19. Dezember 1864 in Leipzig und am 25. Oktober 1865 in Berlin.
