Need to get away from the crowd? Head to the lake! Water draws wildlife and humans here for respite from the dry West Texas climate. The park is south of I-20 between Midland and Abilene.

History
ake Colorado City State Park is a 500-acre park, leased for 99 years from a utility company in Mitchell County. It is southwest of Colorado City. TPWD leased the land in 1971 and opened the park in 1972.

The lake was built in 1949 on Morgan Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River. It provided cooling water for the Morgan Creek Power Plant, water for Colorado City, and recreation. Its waters no longer serve the first two purposes; it is now just for recreation.

Things to Do
Many activities here feature the lake: fishing, swimming and paddling. But that’s not all you can do. Set up camp or enjoy a picnic, hike, look for a geocache, take photographs and watch for wildlife.

Fishing
Drop a line in Lake Colorado City, a 1,618-acre impoundment of Morgan Creek. Anglers fish primarily for largemouth bass, channel catfish and sunfish.

The park has a boat ramp, fishing pier and fishing barge. Call to check lake levels before your visit.

You do not need a license to fish from shore or pier in a state park.

Water sports
Swim in the lake or explore by boat (no lifeguards on duty).

Bring your own kayak or canoe or rent a kayak at the park.

Hiking
Hike lakeside while enjoying views of the water and glimpses of wildlife. More than 300 bird species have been sighted in the park.
