A series of Mozart performances from a live recital given by Nathaniel Mander at the Holburne Museum in Bath in August 2022.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonata in C major k.309
Allegro con spirito, Andante un poco adagio, Rondo; Allegretto grazioso

This fortepiano was made by Johann Schantz in 1795 in Vienna and is exactly the style of instrument that Mozart and Haydn would have known well. This piano is celebrated for its clarity and beauty of tone and brings out the mercurial and quicksilver quality of Mozart's remarkable writing for the piano. This cheerful sonata has an orchestra quality to it and begins with a grand unison gesture which was common in symphonies at the time. The 2nd movement is Mozart's personal musical depiction of one of his favourite piano pupils, Rosa Cannabich. The finale delights in a lovely galant theme, frothy passage work and some brilliant call-to-arms.
