In tegenstelling tot eerdere video's die ik gemaakt heb aan de noordkant van Rotterdam
gaan we nu de Zuidzijde verkennen. (dwars door Rotterdam stroomt de rivier de Nieuwe Maas
zodoende is er een noord en een zuidzijde). We beginnen onze fietsrit op het Charloisse hoofd in het parkje aan de Nieuwe Maas vlakbij de Maastunnel in en uitgang voor fietsers en wandelaars.

De wijk Charlois is een oude en grotendeels nog in oude staat verkerende gezellige en in de
winkelstraten drukke buurt. De stadsvernieuwing heeft er nog niet helemaal toegeslagen zoals
in de wijk Feijenoord bijvoorbeeld waar men druk bezig is met renovaties en nieuwbouw, maar
zal ongetwijfeld ook in deze wijk gaan plaatsvinden.

Geschiedenis:
Oud-Charlois bestaat het voormalige dorp aan de Nieuwe Maas en de uitbreiding ten zuiden daarvan. De wijk ligt tussen een uitvalsroute, de Dorpsweg en het emplacement van de Waalhaven-Oostzijde. Het is een rustige woonbuurt van Rotterdam- Zuid met een lange geschiedenis en een grote diversiteit aan bebouwing.

In 1460 gaf Karel de Stoute opdracht om de polder Rijerwaart te bedijken. Toen hij op 14 april 1462 de akte van overdracht aan vier grondheren goedkeurde, verbond hij daar twee voorwaarden aan:
– de ingedijkte grond “voortaen heten sal ’t land van Charolois” naar het Franse graafschap waar hij vandaan kwam;
– er een kerk gesticht werd “die genaempt sal wesen Sinte Clemenskercke”.
Rond de kerk ontwikkelde zich het dorp Charlois met de Charloisse Kerksingel, de Kaatsbaan, de Grondherendijk en de Zuidhoek. De Katendrechtse Lagedijk vormde de verbinding met het dorp Katendrecht, verderop aan de rivier. In 1868 is de kerk herbouwd en in 1873 kreeg het dorp een mooi Raadhuis dat tegenwoordig ruimte biedt aan een restaurant.

Unlike previous videos I made on the north side of Rotterdam
we are now going to explore the south side. (The Nieuwe Maas river flows straight through Rotterdam so there is a north and a south side). We start our bike ride on the Charloisse Hoofd in the small park on the Nieuwe Maas near the Maastunnel entrance and exit for cyclists and walkers.

The Charlois district is an old and largely still in its old state, cozy and in the
shopping streets busy area. Urban renewal hasn't quite hit the mark yet
in the Feyenoord district, for example, where people are busy with renovations and new construction, but will undoubtedly also take place in this district.

History:
Oud-Charlois consists of the former village on the Nieuwe Maas and the extension south of it. The district is located between an arterial route, the Dorpsweg and the Waalhaven-Oostzijde railway yard. It is a quiet residential area of ​​South Rotterdam with a long history and a great diversity of buildings.

In 1460, Charles the Bold ordered the Rijerwaart polder to be diked. When he approved the deed of transfer to four landlords on April 14, 1462, he attached two conditions:
– the diked land “henceforth it will be called the land of Charolois” after the French county from which it came;
– a church was founded “which was named after Sinte Clemenskercke”.
The village of Charlois developed around the church with the Charloisse Kerksingel, the Kaatsbaan, the Grondherendijk and the Zuidhoek. The Katendrechtse Lagedijk formed the connection with the village of Katendrecht, further along the river. The church was rebuilt in 1868 and in 1873 the village received a beautiful town hall that now houses a restaurant.
