The vertebrae of a healthy spine are shaped like cylinders and are stacked one on top of another. Kyphosis occurs when the bones in the thoracic region of the spine become shaped like wedges. This condition can be caused by different problems and diseases.

Osteoporosis, which commonly occurs in postmenopausal women, can cause compression fractures of the vertebrae that can then lead to kyphosis. The intervertebral discs, found between the vertebrae, act like shock-absorbers. Disc degeneration due to aging can cause kyphosis, as the discs dry out and shrink.

Kyphosis of unknown etiology which begins in adolescence before puberty, is called Scheuermann's disease. It is more common in boys and continues to worsen with age. Cancer or metastatic processes in the vertebrae can cause severe deformities that may result in kyphosis. Postural kyphosis most commonly occurs in teenagers due to unhealthy sitting positions.
