The major difference between Garhwal and Kumaon is the hills, which means the places of their origin.
Kumaon comprises six districts with Nainital as the zonal headquarters, while Garhwal consists of seven with Pauri Garhwal as the headquarters.
Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is part of Garhwal, which with 41 constituencies is larger than Kumaon with 29.
The Kumaon region is in the southeastern part of the state, bordering Nepal to the east and Uttar Pradesh to the south.
The Garhwal region is in the northwestern part of the state, bordering Himachal Pradesh to the north and Uttar Pradesh to the south.
There is also an another small Pahadi community called as “Jaunsar”. Jaunsar is a small community of people who primarily live in the foothills of western Himalayas. In Uttarakhand Jaunsari tribes reside in Jaunsar -Bawar region which is close to Himachal border.
In Kumaon, people speak Kumaoni, and in Garhwal, they speak Garhwali.
The women in the Kumaon region wear a costume known as the rangwali pichora, during special occasions, whereas the Garhwal region has no such tradition.
In Kumaon, different dishes like Aloo Ke Gutke, Baadi, Bhatt ki Churkani, Singodi, Lesu, Jhangora ki kheer, Bal Mithai, Singodi etc. Garhwali cuisine features specialities like Phaanu, Kafuli, Thechwani, Gahat Rasam Bdi, Rus, Gahat Rasam Badi etc.
In Kumaon, traditional attire for both men and women includes a Pichora or a Saree paired with distinctive jewellery. Men wear a Dhoti and Turban, while women opt for a Pichora or a Saree.
In Garhwal, men commonly dress in a Dhoti, Kurta, and Turban, while women prefer vibrant Sarees accompanied by unique jewellery.
