The Pastorale is a typical Christmas composition, defined by Pepusch as an "Air composed after a very sweet, easy, gentle manner, in imitation to those Airs which Shepherds are supposed to Play."

Even in Handel’s Messiah, in the first part – the one concerning the Nativity – a Pifa of pastoral character could not be missing. Its sounds and atmosphere recall those of the shepherds visiting the newborn Jesus in the grotto of Bethlehem.

One of the compositional techniques that gives the Pastorale its bucolic flavor is the use of long notes in the bass, evoking the effect of the sustained notes typical of bagpipes and zampogna, instruments of folk tradition and shepherds!
