Should I be worried about internal scarring after surgery? | Dr. Todd Lanman

In nearly 30 years of practice, and from hundreds of patients I've seen and treated, only two come to mind that had sufficient internal scarring that led to nerve impingement requiring additional surgery. The condition is so rare that it is my opinion that people are paying too much attention to scarring. More than likely, continuing postoperative pain is an indication that a physician has missed other problems such as a hidden bone spur or disc protrusion, a non-union from a new fusion, tiny fractures in the vertebrae. These require more detailed examinations with full scans and not x-rays.
