My Thoughts on Havana (UGLY CITY)

Havana is a rough place to visit. I only spent one week in Cuba and in two places, Havana and Viñales. I definitely preferred Viñales.

Havana has a very small and defined pretty downtown area. The stretch from the Capitol building down to the water, the walkway is the very Spanish named, Malecon. This is about one mile walk and takes you past the nicest hotels in Habana Vieja.

Along the walk you see the beautiful hotels and some nice buildings. Unfortunately, this is the only nice part of town. When you walk around Havana you see half built buildings, half destroyed buildings, and there are people living in those places.

There are vacant lots, no roof buildings, empty areas, deserted restaurants, and bars with no service. It is a fascinating scene. Walking around Habana Vieja you see the stark contrasts in the architecture.

I was not a fan of the open poverty and the fact that you feel like such an outsider there. The people are lovely, some of the nicest in the world, which is saying something considering that all latinos are kind. They will stop you on the street to talk and offer advice (ocassionally looking for some money). Everywhere you go in the city you will hear incredible musicians, the people are so talented.

It really is a shame what Havana is because of the passion and kindness of the Cuban people. It could be so much more but a repressive regime and United States sanctions have deprived the city of its glory.
