Of all the different quilting tools I use daily, the one I value the most is my design walls! Read a detailed tutorial on how I DIY my quilt design walls here - https://leahday.com/blogs/sew/quilt-d...

I used 1 inch thick polystyrene boards - also known as Insulation Sheeting. You could use thicker 1 1/2 - 2 inch boards, but I don't think thinner 1/2 inch boards will be stiff enough to stand up correctly.

White or dark flannel sheets work great to cover the quilt design wall. You don't have to cover the design wall if you don't want to of course. Flannel just makes it possible to press a block against the design wall and have it stick without pins.

You can use straight pins or staples to hold the fabric to the polystyrene. You could probably also use basting spray or spray glue - I'm not a fan of sticky stuff so I prefer pins or my staple gun.

If you do hang quilts up on your design wall, they will probably be too heavy to hold and will need to be pinned.
