The restoration involved a superficial cleaning, the removal of the old varnish, reversal of old and failing conservation work, several stabilization treatments, repair of tears, retouching and varnishing. The techniques and materials employed are all reversible and archival and in accordance with modern conservation practices and the AIC's Code of Ethics.

Emma Gaggiotti (1825 – 1912) was an Italian painter who was active in the United Kingdom. She completed five paintings for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
