In this video, I explore one of the most mysterious and talked-about abandoned places in India — Kuldhara Village 👻🏜️. Located around 18 km from Jaisalmer in the heart of the Thar Desert, Kuldhara is widely known as the “Most Haunted Village of India.” But what is the real history behind this deserted settlement? Why did thousands of people suddenly disappear overnight? And why does no one live here even today? In this vlog, I uncover every historical detail, legend, and mystery connected to this fascinating place.
Kuldhara was established around the 13th century by the Paliwal Brahmins, a prosperous and intelligent community known for their advanced knowledge of agriculture and water management. Despite being in a desert region, they developed an efficient irrigation system that allowed farming to flourish. At its peak, Kuldhara was part of a cluster of 80+ well-planned villages, forming a thriving and wealthy society in western Rajasthan.
However, in the early 19th century, around 1825, the entire village was mysteriously abandoned in a single night. According to popular legend, the powerful and oppressive Diwan (minister) of Jaisalmer, Salim Singh, fell in love with a beautiful girl from the village and demanded to marry her. He allegedly threatened the villagers with heavy taxes and severe consequences if his proposal was rejected. To protect the honor and dignity of the girl and their community, the Paliwal Brahmins decided to leave not just Kuldhara but all surrounding villages overnight. Before leaving, they are believed to have cursed the land, declaring that no one would ever be able to settle there again.
Since then, Kuldhara has remained abandoned. Over the decades, several stories of paranormal activities have surfaced. Locals claim to hear strange sounds, footsteps, whispers, and feel unusual energy after sunset. Because of these beliefs, entry to the village is restricted after evening hours. While there is no scientific proof of paranormal presence, the eerie silence, broken houses, empty streets, and ruined temples create an unforgettable and spine-chilling atmosphere.
Today, the Rajasthan government maintains Kuldhara as a protected heritage and tourist site. Visitors can explore the remains of old homes, narrow lanes, temple structures, and the architectural layout that still reflects the planning skills of the Paliwal community. Walking through the ruins in daylight feels like stepping back 200 years into history.
In this journey, I travel from Veraval, Gujarat to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan and personally experience the reality of Kuldhara during the daytime. I share its complete history, myths, facts, and my honest reaction as a solo Bengali traveler.
