Will flat-optics (meta-surfaces) revolutionize optics? | Reza Khorasaninejad | TEDxBeaconStreet

The bulky nature of optical components has long hindered their convenient integration into our daily lives. For example, a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera requires multiple sets of bulky lenses that must be interchanged depending on the photographic conditions. Similar to the miniaturization of silicon chips that has revolutionized electronics over the past few decades, lightweight and flat optical components (flat-optics) are key factors for the development of easy-to-carry and wearable optical devices. Flat optics powered by the metasurface technology introduces a paradigm shift in optics and transforms the way we view the world and diagnose disease. Reza Khorasaninejad is co-founder and CTO at BRELYON, where he works on the next generation of immersive displays. Before that, he was a Research Associate at Harvard University where, for the first time, he demonstrates a highly efficient flat lens (meta-lens) in the visible spectrum. This work was featured on the cover of Science Magazine also selected as one of the Magazine’s top 10 breakthroughs of the year 2016. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
