The old map is right and there is an old road out here

I found a map from 1850 that shows a road in a section of town that is nothing but the side of a mountain and terrible land. I have to go exploring and check this out because it makes me wonder. There are a lot of huge rock walls out here but the land was nowhere good enough to improve and cultivate. So why would there be a road? maybe there was a homesite, a cabin site ? When they mapped these NH towns they never put down the small cart paths or cow lanes of the farmlands, it was always and only the proper roads. So out in the woods I did find it rutted out with rock lined shoulders and it lead me up into an area that was actually really nice land wise. But it is still a history mystery as I could find no signs of people living out there but it made for a great adventure. I finished off my day with a bit of metal detecting in an overgrown field.
