Lebanon - 12 January 1976 and File
Lebanon's civil war has reached a new peak of violence since the beginning of the year, as Christian and Moslem militia have fought to consolidate their respective areas of control throughout the country. The nine-month conflict has cost 10,000 dead, 20,000 wounded and damage estimated at 5 billion dollars. Premier Rashid Karami has resigned in despair. A
Syrian plan to give Moslem and Christians an equal share of power has been accepted by most parties but rejected by some Christian groups, and there is no certainty it will end the fighting. This report looks at the war from both sides and shows how Beirut is coping with the chaos.
