Actors Who Were ALMOST Cast in Harry Potter

The Harry Potter franchise has jump-started the career of many well-known actors, but did you know that the franchise could’ve been completely different? Obviously, Alan Rickman was absolutely iconic as Snape and we couldn’t imagine Hagrid being anybody else, but what if? We almost had actors like Robin Williams, Ian McKellen, and Eddie Redmayne as major roles in the Harry Potter world. There were a lot of reasons why these actors weren’t cast in the first place, from having a British-only rule to being too young, too old, or too funny, but it didn’t stop them from trying! Ian McKellen was offered the role of Dumbledore, which wasn’t too much of a stretch considering he played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings franchise, but Ian didn’t feel comfortable taking the role because he knew his predecessor wouldn’t approve. Robin Williams really wanted the role of either Hagrid or Lupin, but because he wasn’t British, they couldn’t cast him. Kate Winslet was considered for Rowena Ravenclaw, but rumor has it her agent didn’t think the role was prominent enough for her career. There was also Hugh Grant, who got his career started in 1997 from Four Weddings and a Funeral. He very well could have shown up in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as Gilderoy Lockhart, but because of scheduling conflicts, he had to turn down the role. There are so many actors who could’ve been cast that it raises the question of what the films would’ve been like if they’d gone through with it!
