Many common household cleaning products—especially spray cleaners, air fresheners, and disinfectants—can aerosolise into tiny droplets or particles when used. When sprayed into the air, these chemicals don’t simply settle on surfaces; they remain suspended as fine mists or vapours that can easily be inhaled deep into the lungs.
Much like cigarette smoke, these airborne particles often contain irritants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ammonia, bleach derivatives, and synthetic fragrances. Once inhaled, they can inflame the lining of the respiratory tract, reduce lung function, and contribute to chronic issues such as asthma, bronchitis, or persistent coughing. Repeated exposure has been linked in some studies to long-term declines in lung health comparable to the damage caused by smoking a significant number of cigarettes over time.
This risk is especially pronounced with sprays because the force of the nozzle breaks liquid into very fine droplets, creating an inhalable aerosol that can penetrate deep into the lower airways. Regular or prolonged use, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces, increases the concentration of these aerosols in the air, amplifying their impact on respiratory health.
In short, while cleaning sprays are intended to make homes healthier by reducing germs, their method of delivery can inadvertently mimic some of the respiratory risks associated with tobacco smoke exposure. Ventilation, protective equipment, or switching to non-spray alternatives can significantly reduce these risks.
