NPC Advantages: no requirements. burners (drifblim, arcanine) and intimidators (staraptor, arcanine, tauros) help. gardevoir (life dew, synchronize) is a double edged sword, as it can make it more difficult to activate the lansat berry if it uses life dew too often early on.

Strategy: drill run until your HP drops to about 1/3, or your stats reset, whichever comes first. if your stats have already reset and your HP is still higher than that, start swords dancing. once your HP drops to about 1/3, iron defense until the lansat berry activates. rest + heal cheer. finish maxing out your def w/ iron defense. finish maxing out your atk w/ swords dance. charge tera orb w/ drill run if needed. terastalize. drill run to victory.

Notes: rhyperior has some other good options for moves. breaking swipe to debuff atk. rain dance to halve damage from flare blitz post-tera and reduce chance of burn. curse saves a move slot by consolidating iron defense and swords dance, but the speed drops negate the speed EVs so curse requires a different stat spread. I prefer this build because damage output is excellent for guaranteed crit drill run, the lansat strategy requires rest, and having more fine control over independently timing the def and atk buffs and doing 2 stages of one of them per turn is useful.

Pros: supereffective tera type matching base type, excellent HP sat, fantastic atk and def stats. outspeeds emboar, resists head smash, immune to wild charge, resists flare blitz before terastalizing, solid rock ability reduces damage from supereffective pre-tera drain punch by 25%. iron defense buffs 2 def stages, swords dance buffs atk 2 stages, rest heals full HP bar, drill run has a 80 base power, 95 accuracy, and it deals supereffective STAB (tera-boosted when terastalized) damage. after the lansat berry activates, drill run has a 100% chance of critical hit, which ignores the +2 defense buff that emboar gets from using bulk up twice.

Cons: weak to drain punch before terastalizing. risks burn from flare blitz (10% chance) after terastalizing. critical hits are more likely to tank the match before the lansat berry activates since you need to allow your HP to drop.
