The 2023 MHSAA Division 5 state title game featured a finals regular, and a finals first timer. The Corunna Cavaliers have more than seven decades of winning tradition, but found themselves making their first ever trip to Ford Field on Thanksgiving weekend.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central on the other hand has the finals printed on their season schedule, boasting eight championships in their history entering the game. After a scoreless fist quarter, the Cougars of GRCC got rolling behind a pair of touchdown runs from quarterback Connor Wolf. A dynamic 4th down scramble from Corunna quarterback Wyatt Bower cut the deficit to 14-7 midway through the third quarter. In the end, Catholic Central's stud senior running back Kellen Russell-Dixon salted away the ninth championship in school history, as the Cougars captured the Division 5 crown, with a 21-7 win.

The game was broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit, and was called by Matt Shepard (play-by-play), former University of Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner (analyst), and Natalie Kerwin (reporter).
