It's time to leave: SAILING from Great Barrier Island to Coromandel

If you’re new here, we’re Adam & Vicki. A couple of kiwis who traded land life for a life afloat and since then have been sailing New Zealand’s northern coastline. We’re doing a final lap of the Hauraki Gulf before setting sailing into new adventures.

We’ve sailed from the Bay of Islands to Port Fitzroy at Aotea Great Barrier Island. With an area of 285 square kilometers (or 110 square miles), Aotea is New Zealand’s six largest island and is situated in the outer Hauraki Gulf approximately 50 nautical miles from Auckland. For two weeks, we’ve been exploring the various anchorages Port Fitzroy has to offer. We’ve enjoyed the facilities at Smokehouse Bay, explored the hidden gems of Kiwiriki Bay, and visited predator free islands that have given us memories that will last a lifetime. But our time at Aotea is sadly coming to an end. Today we wake up here and for our last day on Aotea, we decide to trade our keel for wheels, driving from Port Fitzroy to Tryphena. In December 2021, we moved aboard our sailboat Te Tāiko, a Chico 40, and we have been fortunate to sail to many of New Zealand’s islands and anchorages. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. Our plan? We try not to make too many plans but plan to do blue water cruising. Whilst sailing New Zealand's northern coastline, we're completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements.
