The Walk - EP 113 - The Lost Industries Of England - Snailbeach Mine & Railway - Shropshire

Описание к видео The Walk - EP 113 - The Lost Industries Of England - Snailbeach Mine & Railway - Shropshire

I'm back in Shropshire, with Phil, and we're exploring the lost industries of England.

Snailbeach mine and railway in Shropshire, was once the largest lead mine in the county with not only several different lead workings, but its very own narrow gauge railway system that travelled several miles to connect this remote location to the mainline railway system.

This area was mined as far back as Roman times, with evidence of Roman pig iron being discovered within the complex. and worked intensively up until 1911, when they stopped pumping water out of the mine, and allowed it to flood.

A group of local men didn't trust the assertion that the lead had been exhausted, and so continued to work the areas that remained dry, and explored other seams, all the way up until 1955 when time was called on Snailbeach.

The amount of remains left behind are incredible, and walking around the site was a great experience.

We have so much forgotten history in our nation, and it's a real pleasure to be able to bring that to your screen, phone, or laptop.

I hope you enjoy.
